Easy Weight Loss with the Treadmill Desk

The treadmill desk is all the rage today. Imagine losing up to 40 pounds in a year by simply doing what most of us do everyday - working behind a computer! Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic came up with the concept. Take a look at this video for these new-age workstations:

According to Dr. Levine’s research, the average person will burn 100-130 calories per hour walking less than 2mph. Assuming you worked 8 hours per day behind one of these walkstations, you’d burn roughly 800-940 calories. If you did that 5 days per week, you’d burn 4,000-4,700 calories – or roughly a little more than a pound of weight per week!

Details, a division of Steelcase, is a leading manufacturer of treadmill desks. Their units sell for roughly $4,000 and come in 36 laminate finishes with ergonomically curved desktops. They are set to run at very low speeds (1mph – normal walking pace) and have very quiet motors.

There may be more benefits than just weight loss too. According to workers that use these regularly, they are more alert and have more energy throughout the day. Increased productivity and reduced work stress are also benefits touted by proponents of these stations.

With all these potential health and work benefits, you may find your company offering you a treadmill desk sooner than later!
